6 Ways to stay productive when working from home.
These are our favourite tips to being more productive when working from home!
Set your alarm for a ‘normal’ working day
Ordinarily our morning commute to work allows us the time to wake up and feel ready to work by the time you get to your desk. The morning commute from your pillow to your computer can be much more ‘sluggish’ and therefore we strongly believe that the most productive way to work from home is to dive into your to-do list as soon as you wake up. Getting stuck in first thing in the morning can be the key to making progress on your tasks gradually throughout the day. Otherwise, you'll prolong breakfast and let the morning sluggishness wear away at your motivation.
Get dressed as though you are going to work
… otherwise, you may find yourself crawling back to bed!
It’s not the weekend! Staying in our pyjamas makes us feel like we want a ‘lazy day’. This will only drag your motivation away from a ‘normal’ working day. That double figure to-do-list you have to complete will not be tackled with the determination you’d usually have.
Create a dedicated workspace
Why not set up an office or at least have a specific ‘work space’ that you consistently go to, to work and work only! Spaces that are associated with leisure time like your sofa will not allow you to get in that ‘work time’ frame of mind and let’s face it… to be snuggled up on the sofa with our favourite blanket would be tempting!
Once you have decided on the perfect workspace for you, it is important that you then ensure it is clean and tidy. A messy area will cause a completely messy mind… you will notice that all of a sudden you will have this very short concentration span – your mind will wander!
Take regular breaks
Don't let the guilt of working in the building you sleep in prevent you from taking an hour to relax.
Breaks, like going for a walk, making and eating lunch, can recharge you to be more productive with your work. Don't assume you need to be working 100% of the time while you're home to be more productive, this could lead to burning yourself out and home becoming a stressful place rather than your usual happy place.
Have virtual video meetings
Let’s face it, working from home can be lonely and challenging!
Being home-based, you don’t have the luxury of having colleagues sitting right next to you. If you’re a social butterfly that requires a lot of social stimulation, working at home may cause you to go stir crazy or at the worst make you socially depressed. Staying connected with your colleagues will help to keep you motivated!
If you are home-based for a reason out of your control, why not change your physical meetings to virtual? We are after all in the 21st century!!
Stick to your set working hours
It’s so easy to snooze your alarm by an extra hour or two! Be ready to start your day at the same time as you would normally arrive in your office or workplace, and finish your day at the same time. You will find that sticking to routine will help you keep focused during your working day. It is also so important to know when to switch off! We can easily extend our workday way over our working hours but this will eventually lead to burning yourself out. You will then associate your home environment with stress and no longer your happy place.
